The draw of the franchise

Thank you for the banner soulofblood

Why do you think the Twilight series works and became so immensely popular by a wide range of ages despite the critics?
Stephenie Meyer dropped relationship cynicism and went with the forever and ever cliche, and we loved it. But why? Was it her characterization that brought us in? Or was it that romance and devotion has been ignored as cliche for so long that we were starving for it? Or something else?

Someone recently asked me if I could recommend a similar love story, but I couldn't come up with one. Have you read a similar book, as far as this forever love story? (Not necessarily in terms of fantasy/immortals)
