“What have you done?” Edward practically growled. He had just stepped out of his car, and stood rooted to the spot next to it. I stood frozen on the porch looking at him warily.
“Nothing” I said casually, trying to make my legs work, but he was glaring openly at me and I was frozen in place. My heart began to pound.
“That’s not nothing Isabella Swan,” he said, his voice brimming with anger.
“Oh, come on, Edward. Don’t make such a fuss. It’s not a big deal.”
“Yes, it is” his said, annoyed.
“It’s a perfectly normal thing that girls do.” I said defensively.
“Except that you’re not normal, are you?” he said spitefully.
I glared at him. “A change is as good as a holiday,” I said smartly.
His eyes went wide. “If you wanted a holiday you should have said! I’d take you anywhere you wanted to go, Bella. Anything to stop you from doing that!” he spat, gesturing at my hair.
“Oh, would you just relax!” I yelled. “It’s a rinse! It’s not permanent!”
“Well then, if it’s a rinse, maybe you should go rinse it out, and go back to your normal hair colour!” Edward demanded.
“I wanted to try something different,” I said in a small voice. “I thought you might like it. ”
“Well, I don’t. Sorry. I like brunettes, remember?”
“It was Angela’s idea,” I said sulkily.
“Am I going to have to ban you from spending time with her when I go away?”
I glared at him. He finally moved, closing the distance between us in a few steps. He gripped my shoulders, staring appraisingly at me, pivoting me this way and that to take in my new hair colour.
“I don’t like it” he said sourly. His beautiful nose wrinkled. “And you smell… ugh!” he complained. I shrugged his hands off me.
“That’s really charming, thanks Edward” I said, genuinely wounded.
“You smell like chemicals! Like ammonia. It’s not your proper smell! It’s not right…” he said sadly.
“Well, then, I won’t subject you to my disgusting presence any longer” I sniffed, spinning on my heels for the door. Edward caught me from behind and pulled me to his body. My indignation rapidly melted, turning into something warmer and more vulnerable at the feeling of his body against mine.
“It washes out, right?” he whispered hopefully.
“Yes” I sighed.
He paused “Can we just wash it out, then?” he asked kindly. “Please?”
I sighed. “Do you really hate it that much?” I grouched.
His lips were against the shell of my ear, and my heart sped up again.
“Brunettes, Bella. Always remember that,” he whispered.
“I can wash it out,” I said resignedly.
“Now?” He asked hopefully.
“Damn it, Edward. It’ll take a few washes,” I said.
“Let’s start now. You might need my help in the shower,” he breathed.
My breath left me in a huff.
“In the shower?” I repeated.
“Seems like the easiest way to wash it out. Of course, we’ll both have to get in there. It’ll be a tight squeeze, and we’ll both be naked. But I’m sure we can manage it.”
“I’m sure we can,” I whispered, feeling light headed. “I didn’t really like it, anyway. Angela was bored and wanted to experiment…”
“Silly girl” Edward teased.
“And… I mean really… who says blondes have more fun?”
“Who, indeed?” Edward murmured, his mouth curving into a smile.
