In today's Guardian Charlie Brooker wrote the following article entitled "Twilight's sulky vampires are less frightening than a knitted cushion" (and is now a trending topic for it)

Athough an interesting and funny read, this was my breaking point. I've read, and I'm sure we all have read, numerous articles that, for one reason or another, have a problem with the fact that these books promote abstinence - whether that is the whole article or if it's just mentioned in passing.

But it made me wonder - why is it apparently so bad to promote abstinence in the twenty-first century? Does Twilight promote abstinence? Why? Why not?

(Don't force your ideas on others nor tell members that their opinions or wrong, but I'm interested to find out your thoughts on this)

Twilight's sulky vampires are less frightening than a knitted cushion
Until this week the one thing I knew about the Twilight saga was that it had vampires in it, which was enough to put me off. I didn't realise it was a romantic fantasy aimed at teenage girls. Turns out it's possible to be put off something twice before you've actually seen it.

The central theme, apparently, is abstinence; the heroine, Bella, is contemplating whether she wants to lose her virginity to a vampire or a werewolf.Collapse )
